Indiana Black Barbershop Health Initiative

The Indiana Black Barbershop Health Initiative (IBBHI) seeks to enlighten African American men to better understand their health through free screenings and education. IBBHI is a statewide initiative organized by The Indiana Commission on the Social Status of Black Males (ICSSBM). The ICSSBM reviews the status of Black males in five principal focus areas: Criminal Justice, Education, Employment, Health and Social Factors.

Holistic Evolution has partnered with the commission to coordinate the Indiana Black Barbershop Health Initiative in Lake County for almost 10 years. HE recruits medical and nonmedical volunteers to go into as many as 15 black and Hispanic barber shops throughout Lake County, to provide basic health screenings, and partners with local health centers to provide follow-up to the men who are screened during this one day event.
